Inside was the appraisal from about 50 years ago. It was done by Paul E. Sternberg, Sr. who used to operate Fine Arts of the Orient in Richmond, Virginia way back in the 1970s. He was quite knowledgeable (i.e. brilliant) and it would be silly of me to try and do better. Below is what he had to say about this treasure:

“A ‘Rose-Verte’ Rouleau vase decorated with key-fret around the lip rim. The neck containing a camp scene and two warriors, with one holding a large shield decorated with a face. The sides of the vessel with scenes of warriors, three on horseback and five on foot, large coloured banners above each figure on horseback. Bottom border of peaches, butterflies, leaves and scrolling vines. Vase painted in overglaze, multi-coloured enamels on a white glaze. Unglazed foot rim. Chinese, late 18th century, 9 5/8” high.”

Mr. Sternberg had been cited extensively over the years but most frequently in “Art by American Women” and “The Artists’ Bluebook”.

This lovely vase would’ve been produced during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, Emperor Gaozong of Qing. Famille Verte, as it’s frequently called, was developed in the Kangxi period. See less
