Internal structure in white painted steel, sprayed with special cocoon resin, first production in excellent condition.
Original pieces from the 1960s, despite the fragility of the material, these lamps are in excellent vintage condition, the lampshade shows slight signs of aging testifying to the long years gone by but remains intact with an incredible patina acquired over the years. The lamps have been serviced by a professional and are in perfect working order.
Of the two versions designed by the Castiglioni brothers, this is the larger size.
Experimenting with a patent from the Heisenkeil company of Merano, acquired by Flos, the Castiglionis explored the expressive possibilities of a synthetic fibre, already used in some lamps designed by George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi, called cocoon (cocoon). This material was used by the US Army to store weapons that were to be transported or no longer in use. The shape of the speakers is generated by the arrangement of the fibre, which rests on the structure, adhering only to the most protruding points. In fact, the Luminaires are made up of a thin white lacquered metal rod core, wrapped in a casing made from a film made of sprayed plastic polymers. In this way, volumes with an unusual shape are obtained, certainly intuited by the designers, but which could hardly have been designed without laboratory experimentation. In fact, the final shape is the result of a precise intervention in the rotation of the structure, during the spraying of the fibre, more intense in the points of greatest protrusion compared to other areas.
