I wiped it down as best as I could and dried it immediately. I'm nearly positive it is unaltered and is not a copy. It's clearly hand smithed by the same maker as a few other table bases I have found online and never saw one this size. My guess is that it was at a hotel or owned by someone who had a very large sofa or seating area due to its length and adjusting to glass size. it's good that I didn't get glass because that would have been costly to ship and the glass and you can choose what size you'd like it to be. I can clearly see unpolished uncleaned gold in the seams of welds on the legs. Further research has led to me learning that it's made in the manner of Gilbert Poillerat. It is in original condition, unchanged other than pads on the corners and middle of the table. The screws under them are slotted and tell me it's not a recent copy. This is the real thing. Where I live is on the bluffs of the Mississippi River and has hundreds of mansions dating from the industrial revolution. This was a Boom Town for shipyards, wagon factories, a clam shell button factory, iron works factories, and especially mining for lead. There are so many treasures here people overlook, but I have an eye for these things and have let too many go to people who probably won't appreciate that they own a beautiful piece of history because this is now a tourist and college town where people come and go so fast that they want to get things for next to nothing an discard then within a couple years. I like to preserve history and restore it if I have to. That's not the case here though. My gut tells me, and it's a good gut, that this was in the attic of one of the college houses then passed on to somebody that passed on and came to me. Don't pass this up. It's in need of a good home that will appreciate it. less
