Description: This is an excellent example of early Austrian Biedermeier made in the 1800s for the rising middle classes – simple, … more This is an excellent example of early Austrian Biedermeier made in the 1800s for the rising middle classes – simple, functional, and elegant. This piece is estimated to have been made around 1830 in Vienna, which puts it in the middle of the original period of Biedermeier furniture making from 1815 to 1848. At that time, over 900 Viennese artisans/craftsmen were producing this clean unadorned style that, when looking back, is surprising modern. It is likely made from birch, which was very common for this style and which is what gives it its bright, cheerful appearance.
