A beautiful painting (40 x 60 cm or 15.7 x 23.6 inch) by the Dutch painter Jacobus Cornelis Wijnandus (Ko) … more A beautiful painting (40 x 60 cm or 15.7 x 23.6 inch) by the Dutch painter Jacobus Cornelis Wijnandus (Ko) Cossaar (Amsterdam 1876 - Den Haag 1966) depicting part of the interior of the Saint Anna chapel of the Saint Peter's Church in Leuven, Belgium.
The stained glass windows and the rest of the interior are thickly decorated. The vaults give a nice feeling of depth.

The original frame deserves some attention, but the painting would looking more stunning in a baroque gilded frame.
The canvas is still fine, no paint loss or crackle.

Started as a set painter, he developed into an all-round painter. Cossaar is best known in the Netherlands for his church interiors and exteriors. He painted, among others, the great churches of France, Italy and England.
From 1909 he settled in The Hague. In the twenties and thirties there was a period of more mystical work. Angels, representations of mystical experiences and biblical scenes were common subjects during this period.
He trained, among other things, at the Royal Academy in London. He received a subsidy from the Willink van Collenfonds in 1901 and 1902. He was a member of Pulchri Studio and the Haagsche Kunstkring in The Hague and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work can be found in the Drents Museum in Assen, the Kelvin Art Gallery And Museum in Glasgow, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. less
