This Bauernmalerei beauty was hand painted and decorated by an artisan in Aurachtal, a municipality in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt in Bavaria, German. The word Bauernmalerei (pronounced bow-urn-mall-er-eye) translates as "peasant painting" or literally "farmer painting". This folk art has evolved over a period of three centuries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and includes many different regional styles. In the United States it is often called "Bavarian Folk Art" because Bavaria is the largest area in Germany where this type of artistic expression is found. This beauty measures 15¾” x 10½” x 10” H/W/D (when the handle is up, add 4½”to the height). Note, the handle does not stay up on its own. The handle was meant to collapse downward. I was able to photograph the handle up by balancing it on the grooves of the sides catches. Interior measurements 15” x 9½” x 9½” H/W/D; weight approximately 8 lbs. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear, specifically, there is some wear to the paint on the interior neck (see photos 3 & 9) that does not affect its beauty or utility. Makers mark and labels are on the underside. While the milk churn was probably manufactured in the 1920s to 1930s, the artisan hand painted work dates to the mid 20th-century. It was meticulously hand painted and decorated in gorgeous earthy hues of chocolate brown, ochre and tan as the background. Florals and foliates are done in garden tones of pink, wisteria, green and other lovely colors. This beauty will blend harmoniously with a French Country or rustic chic farmhouse style. It is substantial in size and weight and will easily serve as a decorative tabletop or floor vase full of faux blooms or perhaps an umbrella stand in an entryway or mudroom.
