Exquisite oil on canvas made in the 18th century depicting Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) accompanied by two angels. He wears the habit of the Dominicans, which consists of a white tunic long to the feet girded by a rope; scapular of the same color, cape with wide hood and black coral cape. The figure of the saint, represented as a young, beardless man with a monastic tonsure, is superimposed on a landscape in which a castle appears on the right side. It can be interpreted as the Roccassecca castle, where he was born, in Naples (Principality of Sicily), this being an attribute of his secular life.
Continuing with his iconography, Saint Thomas, a tireless writer, raises a pen in his right hand, a symbol of his wisdom and revealed doctrine, the fruit of his intelligence and tenacity. His chest is usually adorned by a sun supported by a rich necklace, alluding to the fact that with his doctrine he illuminates everyone, in the same way that the sun, with its rays, gives light to the entire earth. Sometimes he is represented with wings, which refer to his status as an Angelic Doctor and his possession of the same qualities as angels: intelligence, wisdom and purity. On this occasion, he is represented accompanied by two angels of great rotundity. On the author's part, a drawing is observed that delimits and outlines the forms. The colors have been applied in a conventional way, but the shading in the volumes is extraordinary, reflecting great mastery on the part of the author. Its state of conservation is detailed in the images. Simple sturdy wood frame from the 19th century gilded with fine gold.
