This couch and chair set was made in the late 1930’s by Troy Sunshade Company and designed by Gilbert Rohde. ( verified through multiple sources that this set is made by this manufacturer and designed by this designer). No makers mark on any piece. I will stand by this claim, do your own research and I’m sure you will agree. This is a collector’s dream set! Not many would argue that Rohde was the most influential modernist designer in the 20th century in the United States. (Please read about Rohde’s credentials below.) The set combines Bauhaus design elements using machine age elements of design and material such as tubular steel and leather. This set is probably one of the few preserved sets designed by Rohde’s in the country.
This almost 100-year-old set is exquisite and in pristine condition! Complete professional restoration includes:
• Chrome polished and patina removed
• Straps and backrest rods chemically prepped and re-coated
• 1/4” plywood, wrapped in upholstery lining, added for extra support and as an extra layer of protection between the straps and the leather cushions (not original and not necessary, but liked the idea)
• Armrests striped and recoated in gloss enamel
• Thick 7” cushions in original leather that is in excellent condition, (a few seams were re-sewn in professional upholstery shop)
Smoke free home. Excellent vintage condition.

Gilbert Rohde helped define the earliest phase of modernism in the United States and is one of the most influential figures of 20th-century design whose ascetics reflect the Bauhaus, machine age, industrial design. Rohde helped found the Designers Institute of the American Furniture Mart in 1933, became director of the Design Laboratory School from 1935 to 1938, and led the industrial design program at the New York University School of Architecture from 1939 to 1943. Simultaneously, Rohde produced cutting-edge designs for Herman Miller, including the first biomorphic furniture sold widely in America. Although Rohde passed away in 1944, his approach continued to influence Herman Miller for years. Rohde’s designs are now sought after by collectors and his work is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
