HAND-NUMBERED 40/50
This catalog shows for the first time all known linoleum cuts by the artist, in the original format.
They were created in 1924-1925 and 1929 when the artist lived in Romania.
They were published in Bucharest, in limited editions (less than 200 copies) in various issues of the three major Romanian avant-garde periodicals, either edited by Victor Brauner or with contributions by him:
* 75 HP (75 HORSE-POWER) - dadaist-constructivist magazine, only one issue published, October 1924
* PUNCT (POINT) - constructivist review, published in 16 issues, 1924-1925
* UNU (ONE) - review with surrealist tendencies, published in 51 issues, 1928-1932 and September 1935
It needed extensive research over many years to finally establish the number of printed linoleum cuts (15) created by Brauner, since the above-mentioned periodicals are almost unfindable today. Eleven (11) of these 15 linoleum cuts clearly document the lesser-known constructivist period of the artist in the years 1924-1925, between Expressionism (1922-1923) and Surrealism (1926).
The avantgarde in Romania manifested itself for the first time in May 1922, when Marcel Janco, co-founder of the DADA Movement in Zurich, and his friend the poet Ion Vinea published the first issue of CONTIMPORANUL (THE CONTEMPORARY).

Wikipedia: "Victor Brauner (Romanian: [ˈviktor ˈbrawner], also spelled Viktor Brauner; 15 June 1903 – 12 March 1966) was a Romanian painter, sculptor and illustrator.
A leading member of the Romanian avant-garde, Brauner is best known for his explorations of spiritualism, myth, and prediction in which he combined elements of folk or primitive art with the unusual juxtaposition of objects and forms.
Although he initially experimented with a range of approaches including Dada and Expressionism, Brauner is most prominently associated with the Surrealists and he was an active member of the group between 1925 and 1948, working closely with André Breton himself amongst others. During his career, Brauner incorporated many diverse influences into his work to develop a unique personal style which incorporated the use of flattened perspectives, vivid colors, and a complex iconography."
