Carl Ludwig Jessen was born on February 22, 1833 in Deezbüll near Niebüll. He was the second child of the carpenter Momme Jensen (1796–1853) and his wife Antje Hansen (1800–1861), both of whom came from Risum. He had an older brother (Christian) and three younger sisters (Abel, Margaretha and Amalie). Little is known about his childhood and early youth, but he accompanied his father and brother Christian (born 1827) to work on the surrounding farms. After aborting his apprenticeship as a carpenter, Jessen initially worked as a house painter and then began taking portraits on his own.
In 1855, the Countess von Schackenborg in Mögeltondern became aware of his talent and gave him a personal scholarship, which enabled him to study at the Copenhagen Academy under Vilhelm Marstrand from October 1856. It was not until 1865 - after Denmark's defeat in the German-Danish War against Prussia and Austria in 1864 - that he returned to his parents' house in North Frisia.
In 1867 the state of Prussia granted him a scholarship to travel to Paris and Italy (Rome, Ariccia, Rocca di Papa), from which he did not return until 1869. There are no artistic impulses or formative impressions that were reflected in the work. There was no economic success or artistic recognition. from 1870 he lived again first in Deezbüll and then in Klockries with his sister Margaretha (born 1836), who had married the postmaster August Nissen. from this marriage came the later painter and writer Benedikt Momme Nissen, who, during Carl Ludwig Jessen's lifetime, published a portfolio with 24 colored art prints by the painter, which was widely distributed and finally established the fame of the Frisian painter.
Carl Ludwig Jessen was still far from this fame when he moved to Hamburg to live with his brother Christian in 1871. Over the next few years, commissioned portraits were his main source of income. In 1875 he finally returned to Deezbüll and moved into the house he had inherited from his parents. His artistic breakthrough came in 1876 when the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association acquired the painting Frisian Thinggericht, which is now in the Kunsthalle Kiel. A few years later (1878) the most famous picture to date was taken - Sunday morning in front of the church - which exists in various versions. The most convincing one was in the Hamburg-Altona Museum until the fire on May 30, 1980. Artistically, Carl Ludwig Jessen now stuck to the painting style he had once learned - he no longer took note of the stylistic changes in art - and saw his task exclusively as conveying Frisian life in detail. But by his time this life had already disappeared or was about to disappear. Carl Ludwig Jessen's pictures are largely arranged, the contemporary authenticity of the depictions is simulated
In 1893 he married Martha Elisabeth Benecke (1859–1938) from Hamburg and moved into the tower house in Deezbüll with her. The couple's only child died shortly after birth in 1899. In 1910 the University of Kiel appointed him honorary professor.
Carl Ludwig Jessen died on January 4, 1917 in Deezbüll at the age of 84. The grave of the Jessen couple is in the cemetery of the Apostle Church in Deezbüll.
