The purest alabaster - as this vase / jar is made of - is white and somewhat translucent, which makes it a beautiful material for carvings and delicate sculptures.

Impurities such as iron oxide or rust, produce spidery veins as can be seen on pictures. We can’t imagine a nicer contrast with white, which actually reflects the extremely high age of this artwork.
The jar has been owned for the fourth generation, which runs a guest house. We were told that in the past, homemade ice cream was stored in this extremely thick container, as it kept the temperature low due to its extraordinary thickness.
