Up until her death in 2007, Crisp Ellert enjoyed a long and fruitful career as an artist, academic and writer. She has enjoyed solo exhibitions in D.C, London, Paris and Heidelberg. She was well known and loved as a patron and supporter of the art community, particularly in Washington, D.C. and St. Augustine, FL.

The Katzen Art Center of the American University dedicated a gallery to her. They describe her as "... one-of-a-kind: an artist, author, philanthropist, and bohemian somehow transported to button-down Washington."

Flagler College in St. Augustine built an art museum in her name and write: "Known for her vividly colorful paintings of unexpected scale and composition, her work is represented in several museum collections including the collections at American University and Yale University, as well as the Corcoran Gallery of Art."

Her obituary in the Washington Times is an impressive read. Overseas she studied at the Royal College of Art, London and Sorbonne, Paris. She has a list of academic awards which includes Syracuse University (B.F.A), American University (M.F.A.and Ph.D ), and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Yale University. She was an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Virginia, George Mason University, and the University of Maryland.

She served as President of the D.C. Chapter of Artist Equity and Gallery 10. She served on the Board of the Coalition of Washington Artists and Educational Curator at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

In the early 1990s she moved to St. Augustine where she and her husband became heavily involved in campus life at Flagler College to which she left her estate. Her studio was expanded to build The Crisp Ellert Art Museum as it stands today. See less
