A marvelous painted wood sculpture of Kamadhenu, a wish-fulfilling cow from Hindu mythology who can give her owner whatever he desires. This example is depicted traditionally as a cow with a female head and breasts, the wings of a bird, and the tail of a peacock as the cow tail trails below. Adorned in vibrant pigments, the bovine goddess is richly decorated with layers of lavish fabrics, as well as dangling bells and other ornaments. Sculptures like this one would have been used as a vehicle or vahana for images of gods and goddesses carried in the great street processions during south Indian Hindu temple festivals. Kamadhenu is described as the mother of all cows and is honored by the Hindu veneration of cows, who are regarded as her earthly embodiments.
