This is a fabulous and rare very large Indonesian Hand Carved Rice Chest dating from the Early 20th Century. It … more This is a fabulous and rare very large Indonesian Hand Carved Rice Chest dating from the Early 20th Century. It is hand carved from a single trunk of Indonesian teak. It features a heavy solid teak box with a thick plank lid. The lid is held in place with large teak pins. Removal of one pin allows the top to slide open to gain access to the contents. With both pins removed the top can be taken off completely. The front features some hand carving design typical on the designs found on Javanese and general Indonesian carved furniture.

The piece is totally hand carved and hollowed and is substantial in weight and size. It has a wonderful appearance and aged patina with a lovely richness to the wood.

These items were used to store rice or grain, and also to store general household items and belongings. This one is particularly impressive in size measuring about 5ft long, 1ft deep and 1ft high. It is quite heavy so Chairish in-home shipping is required. Local delivery or pick-up is also available

It is in typical aged condition. There is a hole on the inside (see image) and it has general wear that would be commensurate with age. It has wear to the underside. It is hand-hewn and so not fine finished in any way.
