A pair of Scandinavian Art Deco candle holders designed by Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) for the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory of Sweden, dating to the second quarter of the 20th century. The round, stepped candle holders are decorated with an iridescent luster glaze over a mottled green ground with hand-painted satin gold accents.
Very good condition with a little gilt wear, measuring 4 in. height x 3 in. diameter at base. Fully marked underfoot: Gustavsberg / [anchor] / a hand-painted N-110. Designed for use with standard-sized taper candles.
Josef Ekberg was a Swedish artist, designer, and ceramicist who became the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1908 and was succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg is best known for his development of a hand-carved Sgraffito technique and lustered objects characterized by geometric shapes in bold colors with golden accents. less
