Gorgeous and RARE, 1970s, striking red candle holder believed to be unmarked Carl Zalloni for German pottery and glass manufacturer Steuler. Clean, minimalistic design of the era.
Fabulous addition to a modern home, and a stylish accent to any home/office decor.
This Cari Zalloni candle holder is well-documented in design history, but does not have the typical marks on the bottom. When cleaning, I washed off remnants of a sticker; some pieces were marked this way which is probably the case with this item.
Cari Zalloni (1937-2012) was born in Athens, Greece. His father was of Greek and Italian descent, and his mother was from Austria. Carl's father died when he was 10 which led his mother to take him to Austria.
Zalloni's design career started in 1960, after studying design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. He initially designed furniture in Italy until 1962, when he moved to Germany to design decorative glassware and ceramics for Steuler. It was there that he designed iconic pop and space age inspired pieces.
In Germany, he is most known for launching his Cazal eyewear brand in 1975, teaming up with entrepreneur Günter Böttcher. less
