Wonderful English-made … oak hanging corner cupboard with 12 lights & extraordinary rare original label !
19th Century Provenance; assuming the label was timely affixed.
(With respect to said label we’ve spent hours online … googling said Frank Gore and The Antiquary … to no avail. The addresses sited do appear though, to be actual addresses.)
Original … wavy, rippled, and bubbled … 12 separate window glass lights are most notable.
Original … heavy brass cast hinges; each one weighing alone, close to 2 ounces.
(See photos herein for weight comparison between a heavy silver dollar and one of the subject hinges.)
This furniture piece is in overall very fine condition.
Beautifully designed.
Scalloped shelves.
The 2 top shelves are easily removed for cleaning, accessibility, and to possibly brighten its interior by simply highlighting the very front 3/4” outside edges thereof … with your own special water color or maybe with a fine strip of bright wallpaper … that could be easily removed from time to time … as these top 2 shelves conveniently and gently but securely … rest on back side-wall supports.
(Removal of one, or two shelves, could also enable displaying of taller decorative items, or keepsakes, within.)
The top 2 shelves have concave routed troughs for situating plates, while the bottom level features a small raised rail plate fence.
The 12 separately cut and original glass lights are in outstanding condition, with original rock hard glazing. They have minute bubbles and soft waving and magical gyrations.
The outside wood oak case finish appears to be original varnish.
The very top flat level of the casing, the flat bottom, shelves, and the outside wall-sides … all appear to be old growth pine.
The exposed outside casing is of oak and is a dark distinctive walnut shade … that warmly glows and radiates soft orange strands, like a chameleon … when well lit.
The finish is a glossy sheen.
The cabinet and trim exhibit excellent tight craftsman joinery. See photo sequenced #6.
This was an estate purchase by us from the estate of a distinguished and highly decorated career army medical doctor/officer … that spent years serving our county in Europe.
It is suspected that perhaps … just maybe … that he might have purchased this special item in England, personally, and brought it home, stateside … upon his retirement….
He accumulated over the years a quite impressive collection and had built a wonderfully impressive 2-story southern style colonial home … with an open upper front porch; ala The Olde South.
In any event, this is a beautifully, aged, and elegant piece … and is priced accordingly; adorned with that quite rare, label.
If we had not “gone MCM” 5 years ago … this would in “no way” be listed for sale.
We will regret parting with this beauty. Or at least I will. Not so sure about my wife. She’s ready to purge.
Additional Measurements:
*Shelf Depth - 12” from center front to back center corner
*Shelf Height Openings - all 3 are a uniform 9” high
*Footprint (or top looking
down) - the 2 outside front side edges that sit flush against the wall that constitute the 2 sides when mounted … are 26.5” apart
*Flat Front - 20.5” wide
*Door Height and Width - 28.5”
and 17” respectively
(FYI - NOTE - we also had fashioned a clear piece of small plexiglass to cover and protect that special paper label … secured by 4 easily removed brass screws. And … on 9.19.24 we retook another photo of the label after temporarily removing the plexiglass … for a clearer picture of the print. It is now photo sequenced #4, that was cropped on 9.21.24.)

Recent professional 10+ hour “re-conditioning” *Murphy's Oil Soap Cleaning *Spot Staining (very sparse) *Spot Hand Rub Minwax Satin Poly *Remove and Re-Glue fracture seam in 2 shelves The exterior front appears to be the original finish! The outside back (that nestles against the wall) and the interior … were just recently professionally, lightly stained. The very top, which was “dirty and dusty” was cleaned with water and Murphy’s oil soap to reveal its raw pine wood. It further appears that the lock was long ago, delicately replaced; however, it works well with a user-friendly key. Original marks appear around the existing lock where the original lock appears to have been possibly mounted. The most noticeable exterior blemishes (2 small bruises) appear to the right of the door, 3/4 of the way up, on the door casing. They could delicately be filled…. The wavy distinctive glass is remarkably original, based upon an examination of the rock-hard interior window glazing. Lastly, as you’ll notice in the last sequenced photo with the plates … the 2 shelves were partially cracked in the back thereof … not completely severed. We re-glued both and they are quite sturdy. That seam could easily be sanded “down” and filled fully, to completely conceal same. less
