In this oil painting by artist Rose Kuper, a seascape plunges us into an oniric vision of angles and mysteries, where triangulation is omnipresent. The work features a central female figure represented by minimalist, geometric forms, evoking structural rigidity and the elegance of moving sails.
Two inverted triangles represent her body.
The triangles were not chosen at random. They also invite us to reflect on the balance and interconnection of opposites. In art, they can indicate stability when placed on their base or instability when inverted. In this painting, the base occupies two-thirds of the figure's construction, consolidating its foundations and reinforcing its anchorage. Using an inverted triangle bursting with white to represent the bust could symbolize the quest for steadiness in a world in perpetual motion.
On the left, the uncluttered forms of sailboats or sails drying on the edge of a quay are very enigmatic.
Between sea and theater, female representation, and formal abstraction, this work remains an enigma, an invitation to an endless dialogue between artist, subject, and viewer.
B I O -
Noted for her strong abstract compositions and particular skill with colors, Rose Kuper used many media, including oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, lithographs, collages, monoprints, crayon impressions, ink, and others. Her style ranged from realist in the beginning to abstract impressionism.
Born in 1888 in Russia, Rose Kuper moved six months later with her family to London and then to New York City. She became primarily a New York City artist and belonged to the Manhattan Group, although she did much painting in Gloucester. She was active with the Brooklyn Art Association, the Art Students League, and the National Association of Women Artists, which she served on the Executive Board from 1951 to 1954.
Kuper began as an independent artist with a painting trip to Brittany in 1930 and ended with a retrospective show at the Whittier Museum in October 1984. In between, she gained representation in the permanent collections of seventeen public institutions: colleges, museums, and libraries, and she had 18 one-artist exhibitions.
Although many of her works are abstract, they always have emotional content.
Rose Kuper died in 1987, at the age of 99, in Whittier, California. less
