This cabinet was manufactured by The Derby Desk Company of Boston, Massachusetts around the turn of the 20th century for someone in need of a considerable storage cabinet to compliment the various raised panel oak office desks and file cabinets which were typically produced to furnish banks, educational institutions, medical and legal offices, and all manner of commercial businesses. The line of furniture produced by The Derby Desk Company has long been synonymous with the absolute finest or gold standard of oak office furniture with their signature oak roll top desks often referred to as "The Cadillac of antique office desks" amongst antique furniture dealers and collectors. The distinction comes from both the quality of what they produced as well as their desks having all the "bells and whistles" of convenience and design with practical interior compartments and individualized features that appealed to consumers who only sought the finest in quality furniture.
