The large and attractive nautical reverse paintings on glass are unusually in an oval giltwood frame. One picture is named on the lower border "H.M.S. Victory and Hogue". The other named "H.M.S Royal Albert 131 Guns".
The Royal Albert is shown sailing off shore while the second pictures shows the two ships anchored offshore with two smaller ships sailing nearby. There is a small longboat alongside the Victory with a gangplank lowered to receive a guest.while three other small boats can be seen sailing nearby.
One picture depicts the named HMS Victory and The Hogue anchored with two other ships in the distance and the other is HMS Royal Albert, 131 guns under sail.
Dimensions: 13 1/8 inches x 15 inches (33.34cm high x 38.1cm wide).
Reference:
HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She was ordered in 1758, laid down in 1759, and launched in 1765. With 246 years of service as of 2024, she is the world's oldest naval vessel still in commission.
Victory is best known for her role as Horatio, Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. She additionally served as Keppel's flagship at Ushant, Howe's flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent.
HMS La Hogue was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 3 October 1811 at Deptford. She was named after the 1692 Battle of La Hogue.
HMS Royal Albert was a three-decker First Rate Battleship of the Royal Navy launched in 1854 at Woolwich Dockyard. She had originally been designed as a sailing ship but was converted to screw propulsion while still under construction.
From 14 February 1855 to April 1857 she was commanded by Captain William Robert Mends as flagship to Rear-Admiral Edmund Lyons commanding the Mediterranean fleet, then chiefly concerned with the Crimean War.
