This wonderful chest expertly blends the Chippendale style of the mid-1700s with the Neoclassical style of the late 1700s to early 1800s. The overall form of this chest with the ogee bracket feet and canted corners are key Chippendale elements, while the dainty string inlay on the drawer faces, along the edge of the top, and on the canted corners is a Neoclassical feature. The parallel inlay on the canted corners simulates columns, which were super popular on Chippendale chests.
Made from walnut with poplar secondary wood, this chest is certainly an American piece from a Mid-Atlantic state. Some of the constructions features like having full dustboards that are the same depth as the drawer blades are more consistent with Virginia origins than other Mid-Atlantic states.
Its transitional style provides a unique character and shows a level of quality craftsmanship absent from plainer antique pieces. The smaller dimensions and unique character means it will add charm to any space! less
