The Cactus Gufram coat hanger is an original and lively, ironic and pop project. Cactus Gufram perfectly represents the creative climate that distinguishes the Made in Italy design of the 70s.
An icon of international design, designed in 1972 by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello for Gufram, it is a decorative element that turns out to be a coat hanger.
Subject to countless, free and often equivocal interpretations, Cactus is the icon of Italian design that has revolutionized the domestic landscape by breaking down the boundaries between the internal environment and open space.
In its first production it was conceived in the color emerald green (an edition now out of production) and since then it has been cyclically reinterpreted according to the color and style of the moment. In 2007 the white version arrived (an edition also out of production), in 2010 it was the turn of the Red and Black. In 2012, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the birth of the first example, Cactus Gufram was presented in a new limited Orange and Lime edition , named Metacactus. In this variant the lime green of the body fades into orange on the tips, as if they had been toasted by the scorching sun of the home of those who have always loved and collected it.
Produced in a limited edition of 500 copies for each edition, these totems become a clearly pop and highly distinctive sign in any context.
Guido Drocco and Franco Mello, also known together as the Gugliermetto brothers, are a duo of Italian designers adhering to the radical movement who have been dealing with chairs and seating since 1952. Drocco was born in San Benedetto Belbo, in the province of Cuneo, in 1942. graduated from the Polytechnic of Turin and has been a professor of Architecture and Industrial Design in Turin since 1996. Mello is a Genoese designer from 1945 who lives and works in Turin and Spineto Scrivia. The furniture and design objects designed by the duo still represent timeless icons today: the Gufram company recently re-proposed the Cacti they designed in the 70s.
Nonconformist, playful and subversive, Gufram is famous for having gone beyond the limits of industrial design through Radical Design. Iconic works such as the Pratone chaise longue by the Strum Group, the Cactus coat hanger by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello, the Bocca sofa and the Capitello armchair by Studio 65 are considered domestic sculptures capable of combining art and design. Furniture, accessories and irreverent objects with a pop identity are part of an exclusive catalog always full of novelties. This piece has an attribution mark,
