Collectable antique hand made/hand stitched Chinese panel. Decorative outer borders are machine-woven silk.
The colors are: purple, blue, silver, and gold on yellow gold ground. Impossibly fine stitching, overall composition, and the retained brilliant colors elevate this piece to the highest level of embroidery from the period. Purple is an unusual colour - see below.
Stitched with multiple colours on a beautiful yellow-gold panel, the piece portrays a male and female peacock pair prancing in a fanciful naturalistic setting. The scene framed within a scrolled border in gold thread. The surrounding border done in gold thread in a dentilated (or diapered design) design with auspicous bats.
No markings.
Condition: Retains brilliant color with only very minor wear.
Circa 1920s.
Listed by East2West Furniture, Florida.
9" x 12" hand done inner panel
14" x 17" outer silk frame
17" x 20" silk matting board
Further information. In traditional Chinese culture, purple represents immortality and divine beings. Today, however, purple represents love and romance in China. Since red is already taken by luck and auspiciousness, purple is commonly used by the younger generations to signify love!
