A Japanese Ikebana basket woven by bamboo artist Abe Motoshi (Japanese, b. 1942). In an organic vase form with elegant, curved wall with reinforced rim. The shape calls to mind the Fishermen's trap. The basket was constructed with Madake bamboo and rattan with techniques of thousand-lines and open and close twinning, the basket features s closed lower portion and a more open upper part that features a band of subtle cross and diamond pattern. Made in 1998, the basket is simple yet refined in the signature style of Abe Motoshi's early work.
The basket is signed "Motoshi made this" in Kanji on the base as shown.
Provenance: Purchased from Tai Modern Gallery in 2001 with copy of the original receipt.
