This fabulous Short & Mason 1920s mahogany cased barograph, has five glass/lucite panels and a drawer below to house the charts. The polished mahogany case is in excellent condition, and is raised on four squat turned feet.
The mechanical eight-day clock movement is housed in the drum, fitted with a seven-day chart which covers one full rotation of the drum. The ink trace, or barogram, on the recording paper is a visual record of changes in pressure.
The aneroid barometer mechanism has eleven stacked vacuum capsules and utilizes a gate suspension, a refinement developed to improve sensitivity.
It has its original glass ink bottle recessed into the case at the left hand side near the drum.
Short and Mason was established by Thomas Short and James Mason in London in 1845. The business was located at 40 Hatton Garden, London, and produced precision measuring instruments including barometers, anemometers, and compasses. They became leaders in the field of barograph design[source: Grace's Guide].
