This exquisite large scale vintage poster is one of David Hockney’s most prized ones. It was produced to celebrate the opening of the Australian National Gallery in Canberra by Queen Elizabeth II on October 12, 1982. The featured work, A Diver, Paper Pool #17, 1978 is a dazzling rendition of one of the artist's iconic swimming pools and in the permanent collection of this museum.

In the summer of 1978, on route from England to his home in Los Angeles, David Hockney visited the workshop of master printer Kenneth Tyler, founder of the well known Tyler Graphics Studio in upstate New York. There, Tyler introduced Hockney to a new technique using paper pulp, dyed with colored pigment wet pulped rags were applied onto wet handmade paper. The results greatly impressed and inspired Hockney as he realized its potential in capturing the fluidity and shimmering qualities of water in motion -something he was keenly interested in and had struggled to find the best way of rendering. During the next 6 weeks Hockney went about creating a new series of 29 unique works that would become an important part of the artist's oeuvre. A Diver, Paper Pool #17 is one of these works. This poster of the work has become a coveted collectible because of its high quality and fidelity as it's been produced and published in the same time period by the collaborator of these works, Kenneth Tyler. less
