Walking Buddhas, with an elegantly draped monastic robe and the traditional ushnisha crown, are a trademark of the Sukhothai Kingdom of Thailand, which flourished in the 1300s and 1400s. Sukhothai means dawn of happiness.
The historical Buddha—born Siddhartha Gautama, is more commonly known as Shakyamuni.
This beautiful bronze statue was an important gift given to Paul Lee by the Roshi of the Santa Cruz Zen Center and is still in Paul Lee’s family home.
The crown tip was bent in the 1989 San Andreas, California earthquake when it fell from the mantlepiece and went upside down. The crown was planted deeply into the wood floor below. I think it was bent when it was extracted. That's pretty remarkable. Divine intervention?
