The chair first started gaining popularity in the late 18th Century. Later they were sometimes referred to as "Martha Washington chairs" because of the stately presence. This chair is an accurate hand-made copy of a 1790 chair made about 50 years out of period. The arms, legs and "H" stretcher are mahogany. The chair was reupholstered about 20 years ago. Lolling chairs are particularly comfortable and beautiful for use in a study, living room, or bedroom. less
