Undeterred by the smorgasbord of blue and white shapes, patterns, and marks to bid on the single orange vase in the middle of the lot, I justified my bid by promising to use the blue and white pieces as educational tools and this Italian-made vase turned out to be quite informative.
It's transfer print chinoiserie motifs give it a Delftware look and most Delfia pieces appear to be transfer prints with a few hand decorated finishes. A number of vases from all over looked very similar, but I started to ask why do Ardalt Blue Delfia vases look exactly the same and even mentioned along side Delfia vases? Almost the same. A closer look shows the narrower pattern running vertical is a mirror to the Delfia vase so maybe it's an easily copied transfer print. Then an image of a jar in a completely different decoration with both Delfia and Ardalt marks caught my attention. Different marks on the same piece indicate a relationship so what was it?
Those in the know about Ardalt can predict where this is going, but for those that don't know like me, Ardalt was a post-WW II American importer of primarily Japanese, but also German and Italian goods which were sold anywhere from drugstores to relatively accessible (i.e. non-luxury) gift shops. My suspicion is that Ardalt either sourced from Delfia which was already creating this style or helped to establish it and then added style names, production numbers, and Made in Italy for the U.S. market. That's one explanation for the look alike vases and how a Delfia and Ardalt mark ended up on the same piece. What are the numbers though? Were a lot of these actually made or was it fairly limited? And so many more questions.
Besides Delftware-style and Delfia collectors, this vase might make an interesting addition to collectors of Ardalt's Blue Delfia due to their relationship. Ardalt has several other lines of Italian imports (Fiori Bianco 5052 and 5186!) and a pottery mark musical chairs makes me think more than these two are involved, but that's not for here and this is as far as I go with this vase* which turns out to be very little about Delfia.
*Don't bet on that.
