The frame is clearly older than the mirror and an expert told us that it was not originally for a mirror, although the mirror itself is older with signs of age. The intricate work on the frame, at least some of which appears to be hand carved, is not identical on both sides, which suggests the frame was cut down from a larger frame. To us that suggests the original frame was either valuable or highly valued by its owner. The outer frame appears to have traces of gilding within a deep aged dark gold and wood coloring that only comes with time. The inner, smooth frame, has retained a good deal of its burnished gold decoration. There is some limited damage on the corners as shown in the photos and one corner has come apart slightly, with an ancient nail from an attempted repair holding the corner together, but not perfectly. This mirror would be at home in a gothic castle or an elegant, ancient, old-money family home.

We, in fact, believe it came from such an old family home. The person we acquired it from believes it was one of the many treasures her family obtained over fifty years ago when they purchased the Cinders in Rumson, NJ from the estate of the wealthy and philanthropic McCarter family. The home was sold with most of its antiques and rich furnishings intact. It is believed, but cannot be confirmed, that this mirror came from the Cinders.

The mirror has aged well and is as lovely and distinguished as its surmised pedigree would suggest, but as shown in the pictures and described herein, it does have some areas that show age and wear.
