A post impressionist Paris School landscape, possibly of Corsica, by Belgian Artist Charles Kvapil. The painting is signed and dated bottom left. Presented in fine carved and gilt Montparnasse frame with cloth insert.
A very charming view of a farmhouse and Cyprus tree in their landscape with a view down to the sea. It is probably a view on Corsica as this is where Kvapil was mainly painting landscapes in the mid 1930s. He has created a wonderful composition. The strong, dark strength of the tree like a sentinel next to the timeworn stone and terra cotta tiles of the farmhouse. In the distance sea and sky merge in a maelstrom of clouds. The influence of Cezanne is very much evident in choice of colours and composition.
Charles Kvapil was influenced by Fauvism and by a very temperate Cubism; Paul Cézanne and, to a certain extent, Henri Matisse (as a colourist), also influenced his style.
Charles Kvapil attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His first works were exhibited in 1908 at the Antwerp Salon. In 1911, he exhibited in Munich; His works showed a clear Cubist influence. In 1914, he exhibited again in Belgium, at the Brussels Triennial.
After WW1 he lived in Paris and set up his studio on rue d'Alésia and, years later, in Montmartre.
His first Parisian exhibition was at the Salon des Indépendants in 1920.
In Paris He frequented the Café du Parnasse and exhibited there in a small group organized by A. Clergé, "The Company of Professional Painters and Sculptors," which was formed in 1921. It includes 102 participants, including Friesz, Lagar, Ortiz de Zorate, Le Scouëzec, Astoy, Roysen, Loutreuil, Krémègne, Gallien, Gontcharova, Lebedeff, Ramey and Kvapil.
In 1923, his works were hung at Marcel Bernheim's, then at Dalpeyrat's, in Limoges, where he mainly showed landscapes. Afterwards, he participated in the Salon d'Automne; at the 1941 edition, he presented Les Phlox, and in 1944 À la Fenêtre. In 1951, at the same Salon, he exhibited Plaisir d'été and Le Goûter.
He painted many regions, including Corrèze, the Mediterranean coast, Corsica, where he stayed regularly during the 1920s and 1930s; in Paris he participated in exhibitions of Corsican painters in 1925 and 1933. In 1939, at a new exhibition of Corsican Art, at the Galerie L'Équipe, also in Paris, he presented two paintings entitled Costa brugiata, Cap Corse and Vue de Rogliano. He is also responsible for Dans l'île (1923), Querciolo, Rogliano (1923), Corsican Woman (1924), Landscape of Corsica (1933).
During his lifetime, he exhibited in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Italy, Stockholm, London and New York.
He is now represented in many public and private collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the museums of Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Étienne, Amsterdam and Tunis.
