1940s French Impressionist oil on panel view of the church of St Pierre in Montmartre, Paris by Georges Guerin (1910-1984). Though not signed the painting was acquired with a collection of other signed paintings from the artist's atelier. The painting is titled and dated top left, 'St Pierre de Montmartre, 27 Aout 1946'. To the reverse of the panel is another painting Pont Marie by the same artist (see photo).
A very charming view of this iconic church in Paris. The monumental tower with its Romanesque arches and the bells just visible inside. Trees in full leaf surround the scene allowing contrast and make for a beautiful composition. Guerin has used a vivid colour palette for the sky incorporating pinks and violets to give it a vivacity.
Guerin is noted for his landscapes as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast.
Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is the second oldest surviving church in Paris, after the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres. It is one of the two main churches on Montmartre, the other being the more famous 19th-century Sacré-Cœur Basilica, just above it. Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, begun in 1133, was the church of the prestigious Montmartre Abbey, destroyed in the French Revolution.
According to the earliest biography of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the martyrium of Montmartre Abbey was the location where the vows were taken that led to the founding of the Society of Jesus.

- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller
