This is a striking pair of red statement chairs imported from China during the late Qing Dynasty (1901-1911). This type of arm chair with its back, arms, and seat positioned at aggressively right angles is commonly referred to as “Taishi” arm chairs, which loosely translates to “Grand Master’s” or “Prince’s Teacher’s” chair.
The chairs are constructed of solid hardwood, likely Chinese elm (known as “Yumu”), and lacquered in a red iron oxide hue similar to cinnabar or vermillion. A key design feature on the chairs is the carved S-shaped open fretwork that reminds one of a classic Greek key pattern. This Chinese interpretation of the design is a stylized “chilong” or dragon pattern and is accented with circular carvings meant to resemble clouds. The chair back has a slightly arched top crest mounted above a multi-paneled rectangular back splat with a roundel carved into the top panel.. The seat has a mitred frame and an inward sloping “ice-plate” edge that leads to a pieced apron on the front and shaped apron on the sides and back. The square straight legs terminate in stylized horse hooves and are united by stretchers.
The 20th century chairs are in very good vintage condition. They are quite sturdy and ready to be used right away. The finish appears to be original and shows well. There is errant age-related cracking on some of the fretwork and minor scattered flaking of paint. Please see photos for more details about condition.
Each chair measures 38” tall, 24.75” wide, and 20” deep with a seat height of 19 inches and an arm height of 27 inches. less
