Six Holmegaard sapphire blue, hand blown, Dråben "The Drop", vases designed by Per Lütken. The secret to the shape, as with many of Per Lütken's Holmegaard designs, is the process of using steam from a wet wooden pin, inserted in the gather of glass to blow the bubble. "The Drop" design was produced by the Danish company until 1973.
Per Lütken (1916–1998) was a Danish glassware designer who studied painting and technical drawing at the School Of Arts And Crafts in Copenhagen. In 1946 Lütken succeeded Jacob Bang as art director and chief designer at the Holmegaard and Kastrup glassworks. Initially Lütken perpetuated the classical modern asthetic of his predecessor. In the 1954 Lütken attended the (X) Milan Triennale exhibition during a study tour of Italy. The exhibition provided great inspiration, he pioneered a new aesthetic direction for both companies by introducing soft colors and free flowing forms in his work. The resulting designs epitomized the fluid and gentle organic forms that soon dominated Scandinavian Modern during the post WWII years.
