Titled The Saint, this colorful work depicts a woman with halo sitting in front of a geometric cityscape. Signed and dated to the lower right, the painting is titled to the verso and displayed in an off-white wooden frame.

Born in Amsterdam, Bruning received a doctorate in Germanic studies, as well as minor studies in sociology and art history, at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He studied art in Amsterdam, Bern, and Paris. In 1950, he was a visiting instructor at Indiana State and later taught German and Dutch at Indiana University, University of California Berkley, and Rice University. While advancing his academic career, Bruning was also pursing his art career and participated actively in the local arts community. less
