The Haniwa are clay figures of the servants, horses and animals.
During, A.D. 3 , It was the custom to sacrifice the retainers as well as the horses and animals of the Royal personage when the Emperor died. The retainers were buried alive up to the neck around the imperial mausoleum forming “hitogaki” or human hedge.
Emperor Suinin replealed the practice of “junshi”
