Wonderful group of engravings, preserved in perfect conditions as they are elegantly framed, made in the 18th century in France. These are three plates depicting grotesques intended for iron and bronze work, probably the finishing touches of railings, as indicated by their title “Differens ornemens a executer en fer ou bronze”. Magnificent quality, the framing is completed with glass.
Starting in the 16th century, a multitude of treatises for architects were published in which the perfection of the new Renaissance architecture was sought through measures, proportions and decorative repertoires that came from the classical world, especially Roman. The decorations will be ingenious and whimsical, and are called grotesques. They are a compendium of somewhat monstrous, fantastic and hybrid figures, where human, animal and plant parts are mixed. In these engravings, anthropomorphic finishes are represented, which derive from the new conception of man as the center of everything. The use of candelieri in symmetrical compositions is also a characteristic.
