more
A charming set of four Chinoiserie panels depicting vignettes of everyday life in China by famed American artist and designer Richard Holton. This French term meaning “China-esque” refers to the imitation or evocation of Chinese motifs and techniques in Western art, furniture, and architecture.
Holton’s studio is located in Palm Beach. The organically shaped linear frames of the pieces within the painting includes a fictional but grounded depiction of daily life in China. The narrative in this piece depicts a man with a traditional Chinese hat crossing a bridge staring out over a body of water in a contemplative pose. Strong architectural features and designs are present as features in these paintings. Likely painted in acrylic or oil. Another narrative in this series depicts a man, a woman and child resting underneath a canopy at the end of a long trail. A third narrative includes a woman resting at the edge of a stream with a parasol over her head next to a small pavilion. The final panel includes three older men participating in what looks like an intimate ceremony along with one younger male in what looks like a jester’s outfit.
In good condition. Some gentle wear consistent with age.
No obvious markings present on the back or in the painting.
These pieces would make great features on the walls of any stylish home.
Previously displayed at a philanthropic dinner featuring the 18th century silver collection at the Dallas Museum of Art as custom made decor for the event.
