A rare 1925-30 French art deco table lamp by the famous Paris based company of Georges Leleu (1879-1946). He founded the company Leleu & Robillard by the turn of the century. At rue du Faubourg saint-Antoine in Paris. After the first world-war the business partner or investor Robillard left the firm which continued as Etablissement Georges Leleu. It closed down in the late 30s.
The lamp is done in nickel plated bronze or solid brass and holds a spectacular shade in clear frosted molded-pressed glass. The glass base is signed G.Leleu. The bronze shows the usual foundry initials LR (for Leleu et Robillard).
The lamp is represented as # O-1830 on the 1928 G. Leleu poster, see picture. And described as "Lampe vase lumineux en verre pressé, jolie composition artistique et décorative. 'Roses trémiéres'. Pied bronze, ton vieil argent." The poster is of course no part of this sale.
The shades were produced for Leleu by Verreries des Hanots. And like almost all Hanots shades they show internal hairlines due to the cooling down methods used by Hanots after the thick shades came out of the mold. The lamp is in very good condition. Besides these thin hairlines some unimportant chips can be seen on the rim of the vase and the lid. The original nickel plating shows only little wear, consistent with age.
The height of the lamp is 29,6 cm (11,65") and it has a diameter of 16,7 cm (6,57"). I have rewired the lamp with cloth covered twisted cord. It comes with an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug.
