Stunning Pair of early Meiji period Satsuma heavy gauge earthenware Rouleau Japanese Vases of Museum quality and generous proportions. These beautiful Satsuma-ware vases were made during the Meiji period (1868-1912), in this distinctive and wonderful style, and in Rouleau vase form.
Each of baluster outline, hand decorated in colours of rich enamels with lavish gilding depicting a continuous scene of Buddhist Figures, Warriors and Courtier on a lavish gold background. The twin handles modeled as barrels within arrows.
Note, each view of horses done with raised cream enameling depicting faux ivory which gives wonderful detailing effects.
Condition: Superb condition with no allover losses, no wear to gilding at top rims. Base marks impressed as shown on both pieces, see images, very nice untouched surface patination. Back and front views are similar.
Measures Height: (overall as shown) 9.75” (25cm). Width: (at widest area) 5.25” (13.5cm).

Satsuma Vases form an important part of the artistic output of Meiji era Japan, itself a time of huge change, socially, economically, and politically, in Japan, and one in which arts and crafts enjoyed a vast increase in popularity and production. They are both beautiful decorative and artistic objects, with elegant and whimsical elements in rich enamels and lavish gilding scattered across their finely decorated surfaces.
