Description: This lovely antique lacquered apothecary box was crafted in Italy in late 19th century in the style of medicinal herbs … more This lovely antique lacquered apothecary box was crafted in Italy in late 19th century in the style of medicinal herbs casket in use in pharmacies during the Middle Age and Renaissance period.
This rare rectangular lidded box is lacquered and boasts profuse polychrome hand paintings on all sides, depicting floral and sunburst patterns and lettering “Cnicus Benedictus” inserted in a cartouche.
The original painted finish has a wonderfully aged patina throughout on a beautiful natural color palette. On an ivory white background the hand painted green and yellow flowers stands out. Ocher, golden yellow and red drawings embellish both the box and the lid.
This wooden box is a unique and culturally rich artifact, crafted and hand painted by skilled artisans, combining elements of 19th-century design, regional influence, and artistic craftsmanship.
The casket features decorative motifs inspired by Tuscan folklore and local flora.
Both the size and the color used give this box a vibrant and eye-catching aesthetic.
The piece is in excellent condition with a rich patinated finish, it shows signs of wear and patina, which can add character and authenticity, but it maintains overall structural integrity. An original decorative item boasting charming age-appropriate and honest signs of wear.
