The hardcover book with navy blue linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by The Baltimore Museum of Art and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in association with Delmonico Books : Prestel Verlag. Printed and bound in Italy in 2016 by Trifolio SRL, Verona, on the occasion of the exhibition. Edited by Janet Bishop and Katherine Rothkopf, with additional texts by John Elderfield an Jodi Roberts.
This sumptuously illustrated book brings together the work of Henri Matisse and Richard Diebenkorn as never before, illuminating unexpected resonances that connect the two artists across time and space. It explores the profound inspiration Diebenkorn found in the work of Matisse.
Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The Twentieth Century. His mastery of expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Richard Diebenkorn ( 1922 - 1993 ) was an American painter who's early work is associated with Abstract Expressionism and The Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950's and 1960's. His later works were instrumental to his achievement of worldwide acclaim. His artworks were influenced by other important Modern artists including Clyfford Still, Willem De Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Henri Matisse. Described as one of the premier American painters of The Postwar Era, Diebenkorn's deeply lyrical Abstractions evoked the shimmering light and wide open spaces of California where he spent most of his entire life.
In this beautiful volume featuring stunning pairs of more than 80 paintings and drawings, the book charts the evolution of Matisse's impact on Diebenkorn over the course of his career. Though they never met, Matisse was an enduring source of inspiration for the California artist, and their works share surprising similarities in subject, composition, palette, and technique.
Essays by Janet Bishop and Katherine Rothkopf explore how this influence evolved over time, connecting the work of the tqo painters, highlighting how Diebenkorn drew from Matisse's example to forge a style entirely of his own. The volume is rounded out by an introduction by John Elderfield, who knew Diebenkorn personally and has cuarted major exhibitions of both artists work separately. Like the exhibition it accompanied, this book the first in-depth examination of the relationship between the work of Diebenkorn and Matisse offers new and compelling ways of understanding both artists.
