A truly unique pair of Napoleon III Second Empire Period (1852-1870) Neo-Etruscan style gilt bronze table candelabras by the prestigious 19th century fondeur and doreur Henri Picard (French; active 1831-1864) of Paris, France. circa 1860
Featuring a most distinctive transitional sculptural form, each three-light candelabrum having a finely cast vasiform amphora-shaped body with incised detailing and angular supports, adorned with oval bas-relief portrait masks of a classical maiden, and a baluster stem issuing three candle arms with circular drip trays and sconces embellished with relief suspended chains, rising on tripod bases terminating in hoof feet.

Signed, stamped foundry mark underfoot; "H. Picard" "K" "KK" "M 2061" (presumably for model)
Made by one of the most famous and celebrated metalworkers and bronzier (fondeurs / doreurs) of the 19th century. This artisan was commissioned by many important patrons, but Henri Picard’s most notable achievement was to be commissioned by Emperor Napoléon III with supplying various decorative objects, creating the gilding that adorns his apartments at the Royal and Imperial Château Fontainebleau and Palais du Louvre including centerpieces, candlestick, wall lights and fireplace trims…still visible and on exhibit in the Palais du Louvre. As well, an important pair of twelve-light candelabras, that remain in the Musée du Louvre today. The important Parisian fondeur and doreur worked from 1831 to 1884. Picard renowned for the casting and gilding of decorative objects of very high production quality. Picard worked for the Defreville firm, and collaborated with designers of his time such as Charles Perrault and Grault. He founded The Maison Picard Paris, in 1831. The firm was active until around 1890. He was based in Paris at 6 rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10 rue de la Perle. Today, Henri Picard is highly regarded by antique experts and collectors alike.

Condition:
Great original unrestored antique condition. Attractive appearance, with nicely aged patina / patinated finish with scattered oxidation, tarnish and buildup. Some bending throughout, most notably to one drip tray. Expected wear consistent with 160 years of age, use, handling and exposure. Overall truly remarkable examples!
