Beautiful nineteenth century leather bound French edition of The Letters of Madame Sevigne. The letters, set during the back drop of the reign of Louis XIV, describe domestic and courtly affairs in 17th-century France with wit, imagination and intelligence.
Madame de Sévigné (1626 –1696) remains an important figure in French literature. She became a popular figure at Versailles as well as in Parisian salon society. Her letters, written mostly to her children, are observant and witty. They include knowledge of racy court intrigue, as well as her poetic contemplations about nature and spirituality. She is considered a forerunner to the romantics, portraying the world of Mother Nature — its peace and spirituality. less
