This glazed porcelain sculpture depicts a faun, a mythological creature with the body of a man and the horns and ears of a goat, seated atop a fluted column. His right arm rests on his knee while holding a flute. Below, a crouching rabbit rests on the column's ornamental base. The author's marks can be found on the underside of the sculpture, along with the mark certifying its danish origin.
The Royal Porcelain Factory in Copenhagen, Denmark, established in 1775 and known for its three wavy line factory mark, produced this hand-painted and molded sculpture circa 1960. The buoyant, carefree faun exemplifies mid-century modern style. Royal Copenhagen embraced playful animal motifs during this period.
