(Meta-Landscape series)
Night time in a seascape, a deception, the reveal, and the mystery come together as the composition of this photograph in Engelund’s Meta-Landscapes series. The dark waters and blackness of the seascape appear at first to suggest night, but the qualities of the glimmering light on the upside down waves show that in fact it is Sunlight on water. The high contrast of the blinding glare of Sunlight in multiple exposures on one film frame is dimmed to create the subtle light reflections and dark purple hued ultra-marine blues. This inverted world view’s billowing clouds buffer the lower quadrant of the composition, a buffering from the dramatic image of the torn and burnt film negative, which curls to reveal itself as the plastic film representation of the landscape that it is. The eye moves to the finale of the artwork's narrative to wander up and onwards following the three bright lights, and as the eye moves past the nearly invisible, three horizon lines in the middle of
the composition, we realize, these are three Suns, moving upward and onward.
Engelund’s creative process juxtaposes material and the spirit, a new existential, a new way of seeing. Photographed on the coast of California, Fields of the Sun 49 presents elements of the landscape that evoke the mysterious feeling of the mythic coastline."
