Introducing an elegant antique Japanese Kasane Tansu, a stacking chest on chest made from the highly esteemed and rare Keyaki (Zelkova) wood. This distinguished piece hails from the Meiji Period (1880-1890), reflecting the timeless artistry and careful craftsmanship of the era.
The main structure and drawer fronts are crafted from Keyaki wood, celebrated for its beautiful grain and exceptional durability. The backs and interiors of the drawers are fashioned from Suginoki (Cryptomeria) wood, providing a delightful contrast and highlighting the primary wood's rich texture.
Original hand-forged iron hardware embellishes this Tansu, featuring exquisite lock plates with a lucky treasure bag (Fukubukuro) design. The Mokko-style handles and drawer corners boast fine stipple work, adding intricate detail to its overall aesthetic.
A notable feature of this Tansu is the safe door, which conceals two small drawers intended for storing valuables, offering both practicality and an element of surprise.
Please note: I don't have the key and the lower right small drawer remind close.
