These were produced for … more This is a pair of late 20th Century MMA Koi Fish Dolphin pressed glass Candlestick Holders. These were produced for Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y. by the Imperial Glass Co. of Ohio. These are in excellent vintage condition. They are in a beautiful opaque blue "opaline" like color.

The fantastic aquatic beasts referred to as "Koi" or "Dolphin", on these candlesticks (and found in neoclassical architectural elements and decorative arts), was used to describe this decorative motifs, even though the depiction may resemble a fish. This terminology reflects the influence of classical Greek and Roman art and mythology on Neoclassical design, where dolphins were commonly depicted as symbolic creatures associated with the sea and maritime themes. less
