FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL US! This is a set of antique melon engravings by George Brookshaw (English, 1751-1823). The first plate (half melon) reads no. XLI. The second plate number is a little faded and hard to read. Beneath the plate numbers it reads, "Printed by the author, G. Brookshaw, and publ. by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown (the rest is hard to read). Site of each plate measures 11 3/4" x 9 1/2" and each plate is triple matted and displayed in a cherry wood frame measuring 20" x 17". Other than some light wear to the frames, these engravings are in very good condition. From 'Pomona Britannica, or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits', dated 1812.
George Brookshaw (1751 – 1823) was born in Birmingham, England, and spent the early stages of his career building fine cabinets detailed with hand-painted botanical and pomological motifs. His clientele included none other than the Prince of Wales and examples of his cabinetry may be seen today at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. However, after a period of financial difficulty, Brookshaw turned to botanical illustration and gave flower-painting lessons. Brookshaw’s most notable publication is Pomona Britannica (1812) which illustrates “the Most Esteemed Fruits” cultivated in England at that time.
