Description: Erwin Wending (German/American, Original acrylic paintings, pencil signed and dated on verso. A triptych entitled 'Mannequins', 1992. The center panel … more Erwin Wending (German/American, Original acrylic paintings, pencil signed and dated on verso. A triptych entitled 'Mannequins', 1992. The center panel was completed first in January 1992. The right panel March of the same year and then finally the left panel completed in July. Wending passed away in 1993, therefore this must have been some of his final work.

Wending was born in Germany at the turn of the 20th century into a Jewish family with a silk factory. He attended Dresden Art Academy before moving to Israel in 1937. Soon after he moved on to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was warned of the impending German invasion and he left everything behind and fled to London in 1940. He received a grant to study at St. Martin’s College. He moved to New York in 1947.

His works have been widely exhibited in the UK, US and Israel. His painting ‘Fluchtlinge (Flucht nach oben)’, 1984 is currently exhibited in Israel’s Yad Vashem, The World’s Holocaust Remembrance Center as part of the ‘Virtues of Memory. Six Decades of Holocaust Survivors’ Creativity’ exhibition. We have more of his works in store, including a piece entitled 'Refugees' which is a haunting reference to the holocaust. less
